A chance to put in your thoughts

Submitted by Message on Mon, 07/07/2008 - 08:10.

As some of you may know, encubed has had the opportunity to talk with Circus (a Japanese visual novel company) about the commercial localization of some of their products, including Da Capo and Suika AS+. While Circus is not in charge of the translation team(s) working on these games, they did show an interest in what the fans would have to say about the quality they'd expect when they buy a commercial translation.

So this is your chance to let the localization companies know how you feel about their work. When do you consider a translation worth buying? Please let them know by reading and replying to the interview report (link).

Trans looking for Lator

Submitted by Message on Mon, 26/05/2008 - 20:59.

I would like to bring to your attention a translation project that several of my friends have been working on over the past year. While under more favourable circumstances I would be doing this simply because this game's story is extremeley good, the current situation calls for a slightly more urgent call: We are having serious trouble finding a translator.

The project is Saya no Uta, a famous horror game created by Nitro+ (authors of Demonbane and Phantom of Inferno), giving a Lovecraft-like account of the excellent madness of a man lost of this world. The game is relatively short and the language is not extremely difficult, but the writing is more literary than colloquial so kanji abound. Don't expect to be able to work through it easily with only one or two years of Japanese classes behind you. To illustrate, the first 15% of the game has been translated by sebasdoes who had to give up for spending the better part of his time reading dictionaries instead of actually translating.

We have requested help on the project page several times, we have posted calls for help in encubed gemot and we have asked around amongst our contacts for nigh on three months now. We are however still no single step further than before. I would therefore like to ask the following of our readership:
If you know someone who can handle a literary text of Japanese and translate it truthfully to (fair to decent) English, please ask that person if he/she is interested in translating this famous horror story with us. We may be able to supply that person with a free copy of the game in exchange (but not before most of the work is done). It is not absolutely necessary that this person finishes the entire script translation on his/her own, but it IS greatly preferred.

Note that this is not a mirror moon project, but some mirror moon people are involved in it. In fact we have all positions filled, except for the translator. People interested in this job are encouraged to contact Teus (link). Please spread the word, so that we can bring this great game to the English audiences!

Edit: I made a small mistake in the update patch which caused some text to be in Japanese. This problem only occurs in the update patch and has been fixed in the v1.028a update linked above. The standalone installer is unaffected.
Sorry about that. -_-;

Tsukihime English v1.2 Updater

Submitted by Message on Sat, 10/05/2008 - 12:39.

It has been suffering on the back burner for over a year now, but finally we have a small update to Tsukihime English for you. This release mostly fixes the latest set of reported typos, but also adds three mini-stories as the third easter egg and fixes a bug in the flowchart.

Version 1.2 will only be released as an update to version 1.1. A full installer will be released probably this summer, offering Vista support, a slightly less ancient ONScripter build and hopefully a number of functionality additions. For those who don't have v1.1 yet, it can be downloaded from the same mirrors.

Site upgrade

Submitted by chendo on Sun, 27/04/2008 - 13:07.

I have just upgraded the site's backend. Please comment in this news post if you notice any problems (cosmetic or otherwise).

Please include: Browser name and version, URL (if applicable) and time (including GMT).

Also note that IE-related rendering issues will be ignored. Either get a better browser or wait till IE8.

EDIT: The Array problem should be fixed for all themes (but may be cached, so it might take longer to be fixed) as well as the Home link being above the others (may be cached also).

Also, downloads for Fate/stay Night v2.0 have also been fixed (US mirrors went poof).

APRIL FOOLS: Cleaning off the plate --- with a new project!

Submitted by Message on Mon, 31/03/2008 - 19:24.

For those who still don't get it, this was an April Fools. Or is it? :)

With Utawarerumono and Fate/stay night English finally out of the door, we have spent the past few weeks reevaluating the titles still lying on our project plate. While work on the more high-profile games (most notably the TYPE-MOON ones) has shown more or less continuous progress over the past three years, we had to admit that several projects are just not working out for us.

As of late, most of the long-term staff members have been too busy to work on their old translation projects, and we have not been able to find anyone motivated enough to take over. The fact of the matter is, most of the open titles still require a lot of work.
We had a large staff meeting yesterday (the largest in Revolve and mirror moon history, in fact!), and we cast a vote on each single project that is still collecting dust in our portfolio. People in favour of keeping the project alive, had to agree to start/continue working on that project at least two days a week, starting next month (or know someone who would *certainly* want to do it). Everyone who could not make that pledge would have to vote for closing.

The result was painfully unanimous... Arcturus, Farland Symphony, Men at Work! 2, Vagrants and Brass Restoration are now all on hold indefinitely. Instead of these projects, we will focus on what has always shown to work the best for us: TYPE-MOON game translation. We're not sure why, but other than Utawarerumono (which, if you'll remember, was first started by Soylations), TYPE-MOON games are the only projects that have really made us work HARD.

Therefore, especially in light of the disappointment that the cancellation of the above projects will undoubtedly bring, we are very happy to report a new TYPE-MOON translation project! People have been begging us for this for as long as I can remember, and while we weren't too fond of taking another huge project on our hands up until now, we have finally decided to translate TYPE-MOON's most anticipated work: Tsukihime 2! With the combined abilities of our entire staff, we are planning on finishing this project in EXACTLY one year. Yes, you can quote us on that. Count the days, people. One way or another, we're going to make this work.

Please visit the project page for more information about Tsukihime 2.

Also, the site will be going down for upgrades. So don't freak if nothing shows up.
